    Description

Here's another amazing artifact from one of the greatest of all Disney films.  This
ORIGINAL OZALID MODEL SHEET FROM 1940's "FANTASIA"
    pictures character images from the
    "RUSSIAN DANCE"
    segment in
    "THE NUTCRACKER SUITE"
    .
OZALIDs were an early method of creating photographic copies for distribution to animators working for Disney.  Long before Xerox technology was born, a special technique was invented which allowed images to be duplicated on photo-sensitive paper stock.  The paper is thicker than normal photo stock.  The process provided extremely clear images and permitted multiple views of concepts to be shown on a single page.  OZALID Model sheets provide views of characters that didn't make it into the finished film and as such are important pieces of animation art.  They also show the initialed and dated approval of animation supervisors, in addition to Disney copyright declarations.  THESE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION MODEL SHEET DRAWINGS ~ these are duplicates prepared by Disney staff during the production of the film released in 1940.
This OZALID has quite a history.  It came from the estate of Louise Bauer, a famed pottery designer from Zanesville, Ohio.  Bauer did contract design work for Walt Disney Productions in the 1940s from her Ohio studio.  She received reference art work from Disney to help inspire her to develop pieces for production by Disney licensees, including animator model sheets and production cels.  The extraordinary part of the story is that each piece sent to her by Disney was selected for being the most appealing image of their characters … each image is the best of the best ~ exactly as we remember the characters from the finished cartoons and films.
Among the items I obtained from the estate was a letter from Disney which states:
"This material does not need to be returned; you may keep it with the other reference art that you now have."
    The
    "SUGGESTED MODELS FOR RUSSIAN DANCE"
image offered for sale is approximately 11" tall and 14" wide.  The ozalid has light edge and corner wear, which is common with animation art of this vintage.
This is an original 1940s "FANTASIA" OZALID - not a modern "limited edition" recreation or reproduction.
See photos for a closer look.  An excellent example of classic animation art from the Studio's peak period.
