    Description

Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal.
It depicts a small picture of Nellie, a black retriever (flat-coated retriever) who was on the British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876, led by Sir George Strong Nares. Also shown is Boxer, an Esquimaux dog born on the beach of Discovery Bay
British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876 was sent by the British Admiralty to attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. Two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery—captained by Henry Frederick Stephenson—sailed from Portsmouth on 29 May 1875. Although the expedition failed to reach the North Pole, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were extensively explored and large amounts of scientific data were collected.
The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture of Nellie measures about 3 x4 inches including the caption.
The page is in excellent condition for its age.
There is text/photos on the back of the print.
See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
This is GENUINE antique/vintage item. It is not a modern reproduction.
